Can A Toyota Sienna Fit A Mattress? (Twin, Full, Queen, King)?

One of the benefits of choosing a minivan is the amount of space you will be able to use for hauling people and things. This can raise a range of interesting possibilities.

If you purchase a brand new mattress will it fit into the Sienna, and if so, what sizes will fit in it?

The Toyota Sienna should be able to comfortably fit a twin, full, and queen mattress inside (the queen might have to be folded slightly or be at an angle. You will need to fold down the seats or remove them entirely to fit these mattresses.

To haul a king mattress with your Sienna, you’ll need to tie it to the roof rack or put it in a trailer as it won’t fit inside the van.

Whether you want to transport a bulky mattress or want to create your own camper, the Sienna might be a good choice. Keep reading to go into more depth about the type of mattress you will be able to transport and how to make it fit.

Type Of Mattress That Will Fit In A Sienna

The first thing that you need to do is decide the type of mattress that you want to transport. Obviously, size is one of the most important considerations. The larger the mattress is, the more difficult it will be to move.

While this is important, it isn’t the only factor you need to consider.

It’s also important to think about the type of mattress you are using. This will determine how flexible it will be. For example, if you have a thinner foam mattress, you might be able to bend it in the middle.

This can make it a lot easier to fit into the car. On the other hand, a spring mattress can’t be bent, so it will be a lot harder to transport.

If you are trying to transport a thick pillow top that is 18” or more thick you might not even be able to fit a queen mattress in your Sienna.

Putting A Twin Or Full Mattress In A Sienna

Generally, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to put a Twin or Full mattress into your Sienna. But, to create enough space, you will need to remove the rear seats.

To do this, you will need to follow this series of steps:

  1. Make sure you have put the armrests up
  2. Pull and hold the adjustment bar, which is located under the seat.
  3. As you do this, fold the seat down until you hear it click into place.
  4. You should now be able to pull the lever under the seat and lift the seat up. In some cases, this release might be found under the seat cushion.

It should be noted that not all the seats can be removed. This is because of the airbags. But you should still be able to fold them down.

By doing a combination of folding down and removing the seats, you should have enough space for a twin or full mattress.

Transporting A Queen Or King Mattress In A Sienna

Transporting a queen mattress will be more challenging in your Sienna, requiring a few additional modifications to the car. When it comes to a king size mattress, you will struggle to fit it into the car.

Instead, you might need to tie it to the roof rack or you can tow it in a trailer behind you.

If you are planning to transport a queen, you might have to remove the side panels, above the wheel arches. This can be a little tricky. You will need to slide a knife under the outermost edge of the corner. Then, you will need to apply a little pressure to pop it out.

Four clips hold it in place, you’ll need to pull each one out. This might do a little damage to the vehicle, but it shouldn’t be too noticeable.

When you have finished moving the mattress, you’ll need to pop the cover back on.

Once you have the cover off, you should have enough space at the sides to put the mattress in. Though, you might need to put it at an angle to get it into the car.

If the matress isn’t super thick you could also fold it slightly after putting it in at an angle. This should allow you to fit the queen mattress without needing to remove anything besides the seats.

If you are transporting a thicker queen mattress it likely won’t fit without removing the side panels.

Other Ways To Move A Mattress With A Sienna

Sometimes, you might have a few issues getting the mattress into the back of the car. There are a few ways that you can reduce its size. These options include:

  • Using ratchet straps. With some mattresses, you will be able to bend them back with a ratchet strap. This can help you fit it into the back of your car. This video shows you how you can do this.
  • Vacuum packing. Another option is to use a vacuum pack to suck the oxygen out. This can drastically reduce the size of the mattress, particularly if you have a foam one. But, for this to work, you’ll need to get a large vacuum bag, to seal the mattress in.

Preparing To Transport A Mattress

If you are planning to use your Toyota Sienna to transport the mattress, you want to make sure that it is still in good condition when it arrives at your destination. There are a few ways that you can do this.

First, you’ll want to wrap the mattress in plastic. You can also use a mattress bag.

You will also want to use duct tape to hold it in place. This will stop it from getting covered in dirt as you are taking it in and out of the vehicle.

Once you have prepared the mattress for transport, you will need to get it into the Sienna. Because it is so heavy, this can be a challenge.

You might want to use a dolly to get it to the car. Don’t forget to lift with your knees, rather than risking damage to your back.

Next, you’ll need to make sure that the mattress is secured in the car properly. You don’t want it to be shifting around while you are driving.

This can make the van unstable, making it harder to drive. You can use ratchet straps or a rope to hold it in place.

If you have used ratchet straps to bend it out of shape, unpack the mattress as soon as you arrive. This will ensure that you don’t damage the mattress.

If you have put it into a vacuum bag, you might need to give it a few hours to breathe and decompress before you sleep on it.

Final Thoughts

Transporting a mattress can come with a unique set of challenges. But the Sienna should be large enough to take care of the job for most twin, full, or queen size mattresses.

You might need to make a few minor alterations to the car interior to make sure that it fits in the case of a queen matress however.

For a king matress you will have to attach it to the roof of your Sienna or tow it on a trailer as a king matress won’t fit in the back of a Sienna.
