Are Toyota Camrys Good on Gas?

Before you purchase a car, you should investigate how much it will cost you to run. One of the biggest expenses will be paying for the fuel.

So, will a Camry be fuel-efficient?

The Camry is fairly good in regards to fuel consumption. You will be able to get between 22 to 53mpg depending on the model and type of conditions you are driving in.

The hybrid Camry model is the most fuel-efficient and will get you 53mpg on the Highway!

With gas prices expected to continue to rise into the future, it’s important to get a vehicle that offers reasonable mileage. Keep reading to learn more about how the Camry stacks up in this area.

Mileage Per Gallon For The Camry

How many miles to the gallon you can expect from your Camry will often depend on a few factors. These are:

  • The model of the car you purchase
  • The environment in which you are driving
  • The type of transmission you have
  • The condition that the engine components are in

In the front-wheel-drive model of the Camry, you can expect to get around 28mpg when driving in the city. If you are on the highway, this number will increase to 39mpg. If you are using the V6, it will need more gas to operate properly.

In this case, you can expect to get around 22 mpg when you are on city streets. On the highway, you will be getting 33mpg.

The Camry also comes in an AWD model. In this case, you will be able to get 25mpg when driving around the city. It can get around 34mpg on the highway.

How This Compares With Other Types Of Cars

The Camry doesn’t exist in a bubble. The best way to decide whether it offers good fuel efficiency is by seeing how it stacks up against other family sedans. The Hyundai i30 will provide around 45mpg. If you opt for the turbocharged option, you will be able to get around 52mpg. This is partly achieved because it can store electrical energy.

So the Camry hybrid stacks up well against the i30 as it gets a combined 52mpg highway and city.

The normal Camry models are considerably better than the Ford Fusion in this area (even though the Camry is bigger). The Ford will get an average of 27mpg. It is better than the Mazda MX-5. The Mazda will only get 26mpg

This has been the result of the manufacturer making their cars less fuel-efficient but improving performance.

When compared with most of the competitors’ cars on the market, the Camry will either be on-par or it will be better in regards to fuel economy.

Size Of The Gas Tank

Another important element to consider will be the amount of fuel you can store. This will determine how often you’ll need to fill up the car. This will often vary a little based on the model. In this case:

  • The standard Camry is equipped with a 15.8-gallon tank
  • The AWD model will come with a 15.2-gallon fuel tank
  • The hybrid model will have a 13.2-gallon tank

How Far Can The Camry Go On A Full Tank?

How far the Camry can travel on a full tank is a combination of two important factors:

  1. How many miles to the gallon you are getting
  2. How many gallons you can store in the tank.

In this case, the Camry L trim is one of the most basic. It has one of the smallest gas tanks. Despite this, it will be able to do 493 combined miles

This is the most accurate measure, assuming that you will be doing a mix of highway and city driving.

The most fuel-efficient Camry trim is the hybrid. In this case, it will be able to do around 686 combined miles on a single tank of fuel!

How Far Can The Camry Go With The Gas Light On?

Drivers are advised to pay attention when the gas light comes on. This lets you know that it’s time to fuel up before you run out of gas.

Many models now will track how many miles of range you have left (approximately) before running out.

However, this number is often inaccurate. There might be some times when the tank indicates empty and the range is at zero, yet the car is still running.

Once you reach this point and your fuel light comes on you will have between 35 to 45 miles before you need to reach a gas station. This varies based on whether you are in the city or on the highway and how hard you are driving the vehicle.

Despite this, it’s recommended that you fill up as soon after the gas light comes on as possible to avoid being stranded.

Fuel Consumption Changes With Age

The fuel efficiency of a new Camry is impressive. However, this will change over time. In many cases, you will find that it is getting worse as the car gets older.

There are a few reasons why this might be happening.

Most commonly, though, this will be caused by worn down or faulty electronic parts. Because of this, a sudden drop in fuel efficiency might be a sign that something is going wrong with your car’s engine.

As a result, you should get it checked out by a mechanic.

Ways To Boost Fuel Efficiency Of The Camry

As I mentioned, your fuel efficiency isn’t set. It will often change based on the condition of your car and the way you are driving. Because of this, you will be able to increase the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.

Here are some of the ways you can do this.

Take Care Of Your Mechanical Components

If your car engine is in poor condition, it will need more fuel. Some of the areas that you should ask the mechanic to check out include:

  • Spark plugs. If they get worn out it means that some gas won’t be getting burnt.
  • Air filters. Over time, these can become clogged. This limits the amount of air that is getting to the engine.
  • Oxygen sensors. These monitor the air to fuel ratio in the engine. If it is broken, it could be adding too much fuel into the engine, wasting it.
  • Tire pressure. If they aren’t inflated, your car will need to work harder to move along the road. The ideal pressure will be listed on the tire.
  • Gas cap. Sometimes, the gas cap will be cracked or not attached properly. This will allow fumes to escape. This might be the reason why you are seeing the “check engine” light on.

If you want, you can take this to the next level. You can get a front-end alignment. This will ensure that your suspension and wheels are aligned properly. This will eliminate over or understeer, so you don’t need to work as hard to keep the car on the road.

Driving More Smoothly

If you want to save gas, you should try to drive a little more smoothly. Instead of accelerating from 0 to 60 as fast as possible do it a little slower.

If you are continually going from braking to accelerating, you will be using fuel rapidly. Instead, look ahead and try to anticipate the way that traffic will be moving.

Keep The Car Clean

One of the easiest ways to boost your gas efficiency is by cleaning out the car. The more excess weight that you can remove, the less work your engine will need to put in.

In some cases, you might even want to replace heavier metal frames with lighter carbon fiber if you are trying to race your car. Otherwise doing something like this won’t be worth the cost.

Final Thoughts

The Camry will be fairly fuel-efficient. If you fill-up the tank, you’ll be able to get around 450 to 500 miles on a normal model and even more in a hybrid. This is exceptional, especially when compared with similarly sized family cars.

If you want to get even more fuel efficiency you should talk to your mechanic and request a tune-up. This will ensure that everything is running smoothly.
